Sheikh-Hasina-led government imposed a nationwide curfew in Bangladesh late Friday after deadly clashes emerged over the allocation of government jobs. Nearly 260 people, including 13 Nepalese nationals crossed the border from Bangladesh to India, taking the total toll of people crossing the border amid violent protest to 500. Sources reported that at least 105 people have been killed and 1500 injured in these clashes so far across the nation. The government has now ordered the deployment of military forces to maintain order in the country.

The curfew in Bangladesh was announced by the general secretary of the ruling Awami League, Obaidul Quader hours after the police and security officials fired bullets and lobbed tear as at protestors and banned all gatherings in the capital.
The protesters who are mostly students have been holding protests in Dhaka and other cities in Bangladesh against the reservation of jobs in the public sector including that for the relatives of war heroes who fought the nation’s fight for independence from Pakistan in 1971.
Meanwhile, the Indian High Commission in Dhaka is coordinating with the authorities to provide adequate security to students who are keen on returning to India. Border Security Force (BSF) and the Bureau of Immigration is facilitating the travel of students. The border crossings at Benapole-Petrapole, Akhaura-Agartala, and Gede-Darshana will remain open for Indian nationals leaving Bangladesh.
