Various clashes have erupted in Bangladesh over the Government job quota disputes. One of them started overnight in the Jahangir Nagar University, located in the outer region of Dhaka. The clashes intensified between the students and the pro-government student bodies, which left various individuals injured, and even the police officials had to interfere in this matter.
These clashes started due to the Government job quota system which has been prevailing in Bangladesh for a long time. This reserves the positions for those individuals whose families have been a part of the War of Independence for the country, which started in 1971, along with women, ethnic minorities, and disabled children. Although this quota system came to an end in 2018, the government faced various backlashes, due to which a 30% quota was announced again for the descendants of the War of Independence.
Protests and Bangladesh Legal Developments
When the High Court announced this decision, it faced backlash from various groups. Specifically, the backlashes came from those groups who supported the quota for women and ethnic groups but not for the veterans of war of Independence. Although the Supreme Court has halted this order from the High Court, there are still various clashes occurring across the different regions in Bangladesh.
The latest clash incident took place at the Jahangir Nagar University, where the protesters came together at the Vice Chancellor’s place. This even led to some confrontations due to which police got involved and allegations were also against the students of the right wing for being aggressive. Some reports even say that more than 50 people were injured in the clashes and were treated at a nearby hospital.
