After the murder of a tribal youth in a group clash, authorities in Tripura’s Dhalai district imposed prohibitory orders, which led to the burning of many stores and damage to houses, police reported on Saturday. At GBP Hospital here on Friday, the 19-year-old college student who was seriously injured in a fight between two groups at Gandatwisa in the Dhalai area on July 7 passed away.
After Friday’s arson, the community has seen an increase in police presence, and local Internet access has been blocked. With respect to the youth’s death, four people have been taken into custody, according to the police.
Police Report Registered After Tribal Youth Death
Police reports claim that Parmeshwar Reang went to the Gandatwisa market with other friends to attend a fair held in honor of the Rath Yatra. “Suddenly, a fight broke out between two groups of youngsters, and Reang was seriously hurt. After being brought to Gandatwisa Hospital, his condition deteriorated, and he was eventually moved to GBP Hospital. He succumbed to his injuries on Friday,” Dhalai SP Avinash Rai told the media.
“After his body was returned to Gandatwisa, which is around 110 kilometers from Agartala, emotions ran high, and a few houses and businesses were vandalized out of rage. Four people have been taken into custody in relation to the murder. To stop things from getting worse, restrictive orders have been enforced in Gandatwisa, and additional police presence is needed there,” he continued.
Rai stated that the issue is currently under control and that the Gandatwisa SDM called a peace meeting to reduce tensions.
The leader of Tipra Motha Pradyot, Kishore Manikya Debbarma, demanded justice and denounced the youth’s murder. “I strongly denounce Parmeshwar Reang’s murder at Gandatwisa. I have personally negotiated with high-ranking police officers, insisting that the offenders be charged in accordance with applicable sections. I pray for harmony and urge everyone to practice moderation. I’ll visit the family personally,” he posted on Facebook.
