On June 25, 1975, the Indira Gandhi Congress government imposed the Emergency. This led to the suspension of most of the civil rights for over two years. Decades later, BJP-led central government has now decided to declare June 25 as the Samvidhan Hatya Diwas to mark the day for imposition of the Emergency.

“The day reminds us of the immense contribution of those people who suffered the inhuman pain of the Emergency of 1975”, wrote Amit Shah on X as he shared the Gazette declaring the day.

Sharing the same post, prime minister Narendra Modi wrote on X, “Samvidhan Hatya Diwas will remind the countrymen of the conditions the country had to go through after the Constitution was crushed. This day is also to pay tribute to all those who suffered the extreme pain of the Emergency. The country will always remember this oppressive step of the Congress as a black chapter in Indian history”.

Sikh leader from Shri Gurudwara Prabandak Committee also thanked the prime minister for his historic decision. “This will help the future generations to remember the atrocities and constitutional violations committed by the Congress”, wrote Manjinder Singh Sirsa on X.
