Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam worsened in the last 24 hours. Out of the total 35 districts of the state, 30 have been worst hit, affecting 24.21 lakh people. Heavy flooding has wreaked havoc, with all major rivers and their tributaries of the state including Brahmaputra flowing over the danger marks. 52 individuals lost their lives in flood-related accidents in the state this year. Rainfall-caused landslides claimed the life of an eight-year-old kid. Chief Minister stated on Friday that the situation is getting better as water has receded. However, the power supply has been cut for the safety of the power.
“While the floods have made considerable damage across the State, the Jal Jeevan Mission has come out as a silver lining in these tough times. The transformative water supply project is supplying clean drinking water in these tough times”, wrote CM Himanta Biswa on X.
Officials of the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve said that the number of inundated anti-poaching camps have come down to 75 from 95 on Thursday. Later on Friday, the water level was high enough to drown three one-horned rhino. The rhinos were among 77 animals killed in the park due to drowning or health complications after flood rescue. Eleven hog deers also died.
Himachal Pradesh is another state witnessing chaos amid heavy rainfall. Heavy rains have caused series of road closure wherein 64 roads have been shut down due to relentless rainfall. The regional Meteorological office in North India has raised alarms for moderate flash floods in districts of Himachal Pradesh including- Shimla, Kinnaur, Kullu, Kangra, and Sirmaur within next 24 hours.
Adding to crisis, Indian Meteorological Department issued a red alert in Karnataka prompting closure of schools and pre-university colleges. Uttarakhand and Manipur too have unleashed chaos amid heavy rainfall.
