Jabalpur: Over a thousand workers of the city corporation have gone on an indefinite strike, paralyzing the administration. Congress councilors expressed their anger by breaking a tradition where they dumped garbage at the compound of the mayor’s office. Two days being up and no solution, agitation is threatened to be more amplified. Employees of sanitation and garbage collection vehicles say that they remain unpaid and are thus on a strike. In a protest, dumped garbage, including cans, plastics, bottles, etc, in front of the mayor’s office with hand carts and bicycles.

Congress councilors vehemently spoke against Mayor Jagat Bahadur Singh, alleging he was involved in corruption. They accused the mayor of complicity and more to do and less care for the issues affecting the employees. They complained over the non-fulfillment of their demands and threatened to step up their action.

The situation deteriorated day by day as the nurses’ strike persisted, impacting all vital areas in the city. Sanitation workers and garbage collectors were among the municipal workers who stopped working, demanding that their salaries be paid to them. To express their grievances, Congress councilors organized a dharna on the streets and demanded that Mayor Jagat Bahadur Singh seriously look into the issues of the municipal workers.

Against this background, councilors of Congress demanded that municipal authorities address the situation urgently and find a solution to the problem of paying salaries and improving employees’ working conditions. They blamed Mayor Jagat Bahadur Singh for acts of corruption and negligence in the administration, for which they demanded answerability.

The strike, and later on demonstrations signified the root problems in the municipal administration, delivery of services as well as welfare or rights of employees. Stakeholders are anxious to have an early decision to minimize disruption because the issues of municipal workers require efficient handling.
