According to a Saturday report from Tamil Nadu officials, the number of victims in the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy has risen from 50 to 53. 140 of the 193 people who consumed illegal alcohol are safe right now, according to Kallakurichi District Collector MS Prasanth.
The state assembly was rocked by the controversy, and the Madras High Court overthrew the government. Following their sit-in protest over the tragedy, members of the opposition All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) were removed collectively from the assembly.
“The government cannot treat this matter lightly. This has to do with people’s lives. We would like to know what steps the governor has taken since the same occurrence occurred a year ago.” The media cited a high court division bench made up of justices D Krishnakumar and K Kumaresh Babu. It scheduled a second hearing for June 26 for a public interest lawsuit that AIADMK legal wing secretary I. S. Inbadurai filed.
“For the past three years, illicit alcohol has been sold 200 metres away from a police station,” former chief minister and leader of the AIADMK, Edappadi Palaniswami, told reporters. “Consider the breakdown of the current government. The prime minister needs to accept accountability and step down.” He added.
However, M. K. Stalin criticised the AIADMK for “drama” and the party’s purported intention to create confusion, and he pleaded with the opposition not to use the terrible occurrence for political gain. He remarked that the incident “cannot be taken lightly” and described it as “painful.” He also said, “So far, 47 individuals have passed away. The revenue and police departments conducted a preliminary inquiry and found that Puducherry was the source of the alcohol.”
Stalin declared, “The children who lost both parents will receive ₹5 lakh from the government, which will be deposited with interest once they turn 18. For children who lost one parent, ₹3 lakh will be given.” The aid comes in addition to the ₹10 lakh compensation the government gave the relatives of the deceased on Thursday.
