Australia won the game against Bangladesh by 28 runs using the DLS method in the T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 match in Antigua on Friday. It was called off due to rain at some stage and resumed later, but rain interrupted it again, and they had to use DLS to get the final result.
The Australian team was off to a fine start in their run chase, taking 64 for the loss of the first wicket when the rains intervened for the first time after the second delivery of the seventh over. On resumption, the play was again stalled in the second delivery of the 12th over, with the Australians at 93/2. By now, David Warner had emerged a top scorer with an unbeaten 53 and clearly demonstrated his batting prowess and ability to fight for the team.
The match started with the Australian’s captain heading into the toss and choosing to bowl. This decision proved beneficial right on the bat, with Mitchell Starc dismissing Tanzid Hasan on the first ball of the match. But Bangladesh was in early trouble; Litton Das and, later on, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto started the rebuilding process in the Bangladeshi camp. Though, Australia’s bowlers responded quickly to this carnage.
Spin bowler Adam Zampa performed his standby duty and outclassed Litton Das for 16 when the latter seemed to settle in the middle before Cameron Green took over. Shortly, Glenn Maxwell added his contribution to the team by getting out Rishad Hossain for a mere two runs. The position got worse for Bangladesh as more wickets were lost in the field.
The key events in the innings would be the last over, where Pat Cummins bowled a hattrick in the T20 World Cup 2024. He brought back Towhid Hridoy for 40 Aur Mahmudullah for a mere 2, And then Mahedi Hasan, who could not take any wicket; with this, Bangladesh’ was all out innings finished for 140 in 20 overs. Cummins’ hat-trick was a knockout blow and sealed Bangladesh’s fate. They would not be able to match the earlier pairing.
