While Kane Williamson has decided to relinquish his white ball captaincy and central contract for the year 2024-25 season mainly because there is no certainty about the player in T20 internationals, it has not signalled the end of the international career of the key batter, NZC and the batsman have made it clear.
After New Zealand’s shock exit from the T20 World Cup at the hands of Afghanistan and West Indies, Williamson also further stated his intentions to keep playing for the Black Caps across all formats, especially the upcoming WTC.
Admitting that there was a change in focus, Williamson said that his decision was not an overemphasized coldness for international cricket. Instead, he continues to express his desire to make further input in any format for the team besides wanting to fulfil his non-cricketing errands and scout other options of having stints abroad during New Zealand’s scant international schedule in the month of January.
Here, Williamson expressed his commitment to Kiwi cricket and, at the same time, clarified that he will not be taking a central contract this year. “I still have the passion and want to be identified with the team as the driving force or engine that pushes the team forward,” Kane Williamson said.
New Zealand Cricket’s chief executive, Scott Weenink, spoke in Williamson’s support move by pointing out the energy he demonstrated, his contribution to the team, and his future role for the team. “Kane has delivered great value by being able to follow other passions and devote precious time to his family.” Weenink said. Indeed, we want him to continue playing more international cricket in the future while juggling his working responsibilities as well.
The Black Caps are NZC’s most prized asset, and despite his exception on the centrally contracted players list, NZC admitted that Williamson’s value to the team could not be underestimated. Williamson’s fit to play in WTC ones as well as the ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan show readiness to play top-tier cricket.
While moving to the next chapter in Williamson’s professional career, he continues to express the desire to play for New Zealand, work hard for success on the field, still have fun, and support his family.
