Delhi ranks 350th in the Oxford Economics Global Cities Index top list, considered the most comprehensive ranking incorporating the 1000 largest cities of the 163 countries. Along with Delhi, several other major metropolitan cities of India, namely Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai, etc., find a place in this huge list. Barely any of these Indian cities could make it to the top three hundred, thus making Delhi the best-performing Indian city on the index.
The Global Cities Index, meticulously crafted by the economic research firm, encompasses five vital categories: Economics, Adam Smith’s pin factory, quality of life, environment, and governance. The employment of economic data and the integration of several sets of available data make it easy to rank cities and compare them across the globe, thus presenting a comprehensive picture of the position of cities worldwide.
New York stands out in first place on the index, with London, San Jose, Tokyo, Paris, and Seattle assumedly next in line, followed by Los Angeles, San Francisco, Melbourne, and Zurich. Among the Indian cities, Bengaluru stands at 411th, Mumbai at 427th place, Chennai at 472nd, and the other Indian metropolitan cities, including Kolkata, Pune, Hyderabad, etc, are also among the 300 global cities having the worst air quality.
Other Indian cities that have also made it to the list are Kochi, Chandigarh, and Ahmedabad, but with relatively lower scores. On an amusing note, cities in South India seem to have it comparatively better than other cities across the country, as seen in the higher ranks of the list.
