The 77th Cannes Film Festival launched with Quentin Dupieux’s “The Second Act,” the 13th feature since 2007 from the director, showing how productive his career can be. The enfant terrible of French cinema is the director who also creates the scripts, shoots the films, and even scores the music independently.

The movie depicts an actual willingness of real actors to take part in the film within film, in which Willy and David, played by Raphel Quenare and Louis Garrel, make fun of the falling-out affair of Florence, portrayed by Lea Seydoux. The plot amazes Flip as the actor, whose plot is similar to Florence and her father, played by Vincent Lindon. Their self-doubt is that he gets one offer for an upgrade, so the story gets more depth.

“The Second Act” is like François Truffaut’s “Day for Night” and portrays a comic perspective on the inflated egos in the French movie industry. Dupieux, typical of this director, manages to bring in trendy issues like AI, cancel culture, and #MeToo and has a broad view of the film sector’s problems.

Shedding her doubt, Seydoux’s performance was simply brilliant. On the other hand, Garrel beautifully expressed the hidden arrogance. The configuration of the film as a character contrasts the old hat-ness of the pros with the hastiness of newcomers, more goals of the popularity and fame’s meaning to people are being raised.

The movie demonstrates Dupieux’s skill in societal controversies, ramping up significantly in the latest release, among others. Thierry Fremaux, as he was Festival’s chief, highlighted a topic cinema ahead of controversies. The rumours even say some media investigations of sexual abuse in France’s audiovisual sector aroused some doubts in the audience about the popular festival.

Fremaux’s words led towards artistic standards that measured films until he created a separate category for those perceived as nothing but scandal fodder. The organisers seem to be ready for any polemics that may arise around the festival, a solution that relies on a preventive approach to maintain its image intact.

“The Second Act” is a fascinating stage given by Dupieux illustrating the industry topics that can’t leave anyone indifferent and will make people talk beyond the screen glare.
