Myanmar’s ruling junta succumb to further blows, as the armed resisters take over the administration of Myawaddy town, a strategic area that borders Thailand and is pivotal in the cross-country trade. The dawn raid is prompted by a series of attack on India’s, China’s and Bangladesh’s neighboring regions by the Karen National Union (KNU) and People’s Defense Forces (PDF), sympathizers of Myanmar government-in-exile.

On Sunday, with their morale widened by the KNU’s spring offensive in eastern Kayin state and the PDF’s robust efforts, resistance forces took military headquarters, a command center, and many others in Myawaddy. The military regime’s loss of its position as the primary overland trade center between Myanmar and Thailand being a strategically significant situation for the city further emphasizes the situation.

Since launching a coordinated offensive against the junta last October, the resistance forces have steadily secured crucial trading and crossing points along Myanmar’s borders with neighboring countries. This recent victory in Myawaddy amplifies the junta’s vulnerabilities and exacerbates the country’s instability.

Observers familiar with the situation, speaking anonymously, characterize the fall of Myawaddy as a significant blow to the junta, heightening concerns about Myanmar’s precarious state. While Indian officials have yet to respond, the country’s Ministry of External Affairs has previously voiced apprehension over the violence and instability in Myanmar, emphasizing its direct implications for India’s security.

A continued resistance to the military rulers represented by Myanmar indicates perhaps the most fundamental reasons and complexity behind what is going on in the country at the moment. The power of the junta reduces bit by bit as the different resistance movements grow and gain much more ground, threatening the regime and exposing its worst predicaments. It is not only territorial that Myawaddy fall but also a big motivator for people who live under junta’s control to act against this political system, so the whole country runs out of control and is on the brink of a big change.
