The income tax department has issued a notice to the Communist Party of India for dues amounting to ₹11 crore, citing the use of an old PAN card during tax filings. Trinamool MP Saket Gokhale also revealed receiving 11 income tax notices in the last 72 hours. These developments follow the Congress party’s ongoing tax issues.
The Congress party recently accused the BJP of engaging in “tax terrorism,” alleging fresh notices demanding ₹1,823.08 crore in payments. Congress treasurer Ajay Maken claimed that while the BJP should be fined ₹4,617.56 crore for income tax law violations, no such action has been taken.
Earlier, the Delhi High Court dismissed a Congress plea challenging the income tax probe, which began in February when the party’s main bank accounts were reportedly frozen. Congress President Mallikajun Kharge criticized the actions, highlighting that the party was fined ₹135 crore for ₹14 lakh deposits, and its account was frozen. He also noted that the BJP has faced no similar penalties, amounting to a total of ₹4,600 crore over seven years.
Meanwhile, Trinamool Rajya Sabha MP Saket Gokhale criticized the Modi government, accusing it of attempting to pressure the opposition ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Gokhale highlighted the government’s use of the Income Tax Department after the Enforcement Directorate (ED), questioning the BJP’s desperation.
Overall, the recent actions by the IT department against various political parties and individuals have sparked controversy and allegations of political vendettas, raising concerns about the fairness of the electoral process.
