The announcement of the 2024 Lok Sabha election dates has sparked political fervor in Madhya Pradesh. The Khandwa Lok Sabha seat, formed by merging Malwa and Nimar, has been a battleground for stalwarts from the BJP and Congress. BJP’s late state president Nandkumar Singh Chauhan, a seasoned winner in multiple elections from here, except for a loss to Arun Yadav in 2009, has been a dominant figure. Currently, BJP’s Gyaneshwar Patil represents the seat, continuing the party’s stronghold despite Khandwa being historically considered a Congress stronghold.
Khandwa, with 20 previous elections, has seen BJP triumph nine times, with Nandkumar Singh Chauhan holding the record for the most wins, contesting seven times and losing only once. Madhya Pradesh’s stalwart, Kushabhau Thakre, contested from Khandwa in the 1979 Lok Sabha by-polls on a Jan Sangh ticket and emerged victorious.
In 2019, Nandkumar Singh Chauhan won the Khandwa Lok Sabha seat again, but he passed away in 2021. Subsequently, Gyaneshwar Patil was nominated by the BJP and won with a reduced margin compared to the 2019 victory. The region’s residents have long complained that most of their MPs hail from Burhanpur district. Khandwa parliamentary constituency comprises eight assembly segments, of which seven are held by the BJP, leaving only one to the Congress.
Khandwa, known for its natural beauty, is also a tourist destination. It is home to the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga, one of the 12 revered Jyotirlingas. Other popular tourist spots include Ghantaghar, Dada Dhuniwale Darbar, Harsud, Moondi, Siddhnath Temple, and Veerkhala Ruk.
