Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, whose life inspired the character Phunsukh Wangdu in the film “3 Idiots,” has concluded his 21-day hunger strike. While his protest demanding statehood for Ladakh and environmental safeguards has ended, Wangchuk remains resolute in his fight.

The hunger strike, which began on March 6th, saw Wangchuk consuming only salt and water. He aimed to raise awareness about the delicate Himalayan ecosystem and Ladakh’s aspirations for self-governance. Thousands across the union territory rallied in support, and women’s groups have pledged to continue the cause through their own hunger strike.

Wangchuk’s protest stemmed from dissatisfaction with the central government’s response. Following meetings with Ladakhi representatives, a high-level committee was formed, but it failed to deliver a breakthrough. This lack of progress prompted Wangchuk’s drastic action.

Despite ending the strike, Wangchuk vowed to persist in his advocacy. “The fight will go on,” he declared. His focus remains on securing constitutional safeguards for Ladakh, ensuring political rights for its people, and protecting the fragile Himalayan environment from unchecked development.

Wangchuk’s hunger strike garnered national attention, highlighting the concerns of the Ladakhi people. While the immediate protest has ended, it has served as a powerful catalyst. The coming days will reveal whether the central government will engage in meaningful dialogue to address Ladakh’s demands.pen_sparktunesharemore_vert
