Raipur: Just before the Lok Sabha elections, a volley of allegations and counter-allegations has erupted between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress in India. Deepak Baij, the Pradesh Adhyaksh (State President) of the Congress party and the Member of Parliament from Bastar, has accused the BJP of misleading the people of Chhattisgarh in the name of Prime Minister Modi’s guarantee. He has raised several questions regarding the Mahatari Vandana Yojana, Naxal violence, and incidents of sexual harassment with students in Narayanpur, putting the government on the defensive.

Deepak Baij has alleged that the state government, in the run-up to the elections, promised under the Mahatari Vandana Yojana to provide a guaranteed sum of ₹1,000 per month to every woman’s account in Chhattisgarh, invoking Prime Minister Modi’s assurance. However, after coming into power, the government did not disburse the funds for three months, and even when the money was finally released, it failed to reach the accounts of 70% of the women. Baij asserted that the BJP faces a challenge from the Congress to disclose the names of all beneficiaries who have received the funds.

Not only that, but Baij highlighted that the conditions of the Mahatari Vandana Yojana are not being applied uniformly, depriving many women in Chhattisgarh of the scheme’s benefits. Referring to the incident in Narayanpur, he claimed that there is a link between the involved teacher and the BJP, posing questions about the delayed administrative action in the case. Baij criticized the BJP-led government, stating that incidents are increasing in Naxal-affected areas, and the state’s Home Minister, once accused of endorsing target killings, is now making defensive statements. Security for Congress party leaders is being reduced, while BJP leaders are being provided with enhanced security.

The ongoing exchange of accusations sets the stage for a heated political battle in the upcoming elections, with both parties attempting to gain an edge by scrutinizing each other’s policies and actions.
