The Madhya Pradesh High Court has granted permission for an Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) survey of the contentious Bhojshala complex in Dhar district. Justices Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari and Devnarayan Mishra directed a thorough scientific investigation, survey, and excavation of the site. This decision follows a plea by a Hindu organization, asserting the complex as a temple of Goddess Vagdevi.

The court mandates a comprehensive, documented report on the survey prepared by an Expert Committee of five or more senior ASI officers, led by the Director General or Additional Director General, within six weeks. Bhojshala, an ASI-protected monument, is claimed by Hindus as a temple of Goddess Vagdevi (Saraswati) and by Muslims as the Kamal Maula Mosque.

An ASI order from April 7, 2003, allows Hindus to worship inside every Tuesday and Muslims to offer namaz every Friday. The recent court order advocates for a scientific investigation using modern methods like GPR-GPS survey, covering the disputed Bhojshala Temple cum Kamal Maula Mosque complex and its 50-meter peripheral ring area.

Additionally, the ASI is instructed to unlock all sealed rooms, preparing an inventory of artifacts, idols, deities, or structures found within, submitting photographs. The court emphasizes a detailed scientific investigation, including carbon dating to determine the age of both above-ground and underground structures.

Furthermore, the court insists on photographic and videographic documentation of survey proceedings in the presence of two representatives from each side. This decision reflects the court’s commitment to a thorough and impartial examination of the Bhojshala complex, aiming to address the conflicting claims and provide a factual basis for understanding its historical and religious significance.
