Responding to a query regarding India’s stance on Russia in the context of the Ukraine war, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar strongly asserted that while another country occupies India’s territory, the global community has remained silent on the issue. In a veiled criticism of Western nations, Jaishankar noted the selective application of principles, emphasizing that nations tend to cherry-pick issues based on their convenience.
During an interview in Japan, a journalist questioned Jaishankar about whether India’s decision not to criticize Russia could be seen as a display of “double standards.” In response, Jaishankar highlighted the complexities of global politics, stating that countries often prioritize issues that suit their interests. He drew attention to India’s historical context, citing the country’s experience with aggression and boundary changes post-independence.
Jaishankar expressed disappointment with the lack of global response to India’s territorial challenges, remarking on the selective application of principles. He underscored the need for consistency in upholding principles, criticizing the tendency to cherry-pick issues based on convenience.
In the same interview, Jaishankar advocated for reform in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), acknowledging the changing global landscape since its inception. He argued that the current structure, designed for around 50 member countries, is inadequate for the nearly 200-member UN. Jaishankar pointed out the challenges posed by those resistant to change, delaying essential reforms.
Highlighting Asia’s dynamism and demographic importance, Jaishankar suggested a strong case for reforming the UNSC. He attributed the lack of progress in discussions to opposition from entities unwilling to embrace change, with a subtle reference to China, the only permanent UNSC member opposing India’s inclusion.
