Mungeli: The “Brooks Higher Secondary School” in Jarahagawn (Motimpur), Mungeli, has a rich legacy known for academic excellence and discipline. Established in 1943 by Dr. D.A. Magowan, initially named “Mission Middle School,” it evolved into a pivotal educational institution in the Bilaspur district. It offered education up to the 8th grade and attracted students from surrounding villages, fostering an environment of learning.
The school gained recognition in 1962 and continued to serve as a significant educational hub, providing education in agriculture alongside English and Hindi. The curriculum expanded to include arts, science, mathematics, and biology from 1976 onwards. In 2020, the management introduced agriculture as a subject again.
Over the years, the school faced various challenges, including insufficient resources for building repairs, construction of bridges, accessibility paths, boundary walls, furniture, sports facilities, computer classes, and computer equipment, among other necessities. Despite the hurdles, it produced notable alumni, including present-day leaders, scientists, engineers, police officers, teachers, and lawyers.
Recently, former students initiated a campaign to renovate the school, addressing these challenges. The alumni organized a reunion program to discuss the school’s needs and demands. Energetic former students pledged financial assistance voluntarily and launched a campaign to refurbish the school. The effort garnered significant support, with many former students actively participating and more individuals joining the cause.
The school’s present principal, Anvita Lal, emphasized that the school is affiliated with the Chhattisgarh Board of Secondary Education and operates with a minimal grant from the government. While teachers receive salary grants, there is a lack of funds for the school’s maintenance and improvement. The current condition of the school building, including issues with infrastructure, library, toilets, and additional faculty, poses challenges.
The “Brooks Higher Secondary School,” originally known as “Jarahagawn Middle School,” has contributed significantly to education in the region. It played a crucial role in shaping students’ future from 32 villages. The initiative by former students to restore and support the school aims to revitalize its educational mission and legacy.
