Jay Shah, the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has been unanimously reappointed as the head of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) during the ACC Annual General Meeting in Bali on January 31. This marks his continued leadership of the continental body for an additional two years. Jay Shah initially assumed the role of ACC president in 2021, succeeding Nazmul Hassan in January of that year. At the age of 32, he became the youngest administrator to take on the position.
His first term as ACC president, which spanned from 2021 to 2022, saw the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic impacting cricket globally. Under his leadership, the men’s Asia Cup in 2022 was successfully relocated to the UAE due to Sri Lanka’s financial crisis. Additionally, Jay Shah played a key role in implementing a hybrid format for the men’s Asia Cup 2023, co-hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka and contested in the 50-over format.
Having steered the ACC through this challenging period, Jay Shah has been reappointed for another two-year term as the ACC chief in 2023. Notably, he holds the position of the honorable secretary of the BCCI, collaborating with figures like Sourav Ganguly and Roger Binny, who assumed the role of BCCI president last year.
In a significant development in 2023, the ACC unveiled a comprehensive two-year fixture list, encompassing tournaments for men, women, and age-group teams. Among the events introduced is the Women’s T20 Asia Cup scheduled for September 2024. The ACC also revived the Emerging Asia Cup for both men and women, with the U19 Asia Cup tournaments announced for 2023 and 2024.
Looking ahead, the next edition of the men’s Asia Cup is anticipated to return to the T20 format, adding excitement to the future of cricket in the Asian region under Jay Shah’s continued leadership of the ACC.
