Patna: In a surprising turn of events, Nitish Kumar, who until yesterday was spearheading the opposition against the BJP, took the oath as the Chief Minister of Bihar on Sunday, forming a new alliance with the BJP. This move comes after Kumar severed ties with his former ally, the RJD, and tendered his resignation as the Chief Minister earlier in the day.
Addressing the media after meeting the governor, Kumar explained, “I have resigned from the post of chief minister today. The new Grand Alliance that we created (in August 2022) is not in a good condition. The situation is not looking good.” The political landscape witnessed a dramatic shift as Samrat Chaudhary and Vijay Sinha from the BJP assumed the roles of Mr. Kumar’s new deputies.
Criticism swiftly followed from the NCP, with the Sharad Pawar faction describing Nitish Kumar as the “great paltu Ram” in political history, accusing him of obediently aligning with the BJP’s commands. Clyde Crasto, NCP’s national spokesperson, remarked, “It is not surprising that he has done this ‘Volte – Face’ once again because he seems to be addicted to this kind of behaviour.” The NCP labeled the BJP as Nitish Kumar’s “madari” (puppeteer), suggesting a pattern of compliance to their directives.
After Nitish Kumar’s ninth oath-taking ceremony as Bihar Chief Minister, this time in collaboration with the BJP, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the newly formed Bihar government. In a tweet in Hindi, Modi expressed confidence that the NDA government in Bihar, under Nitish Kumar’s leadership, along with Samrat Chaudhary and Vijay Sinha as Deputy Chief Ministers, would work tirelessly for the state’s development and to meet the aspirations of its people. “I am confident that this team will serve my family members of the state with full dedication. @samrat4bjp @VijayKrSinhaBih,” added the Prime Minister.
The political realignment in Bihar has set the stage for a renewed alliance and has drawn attention to the intricate dynamics of regional politics, leaving both supporters and critics anticipating the implications of this unexpected collaboration.
