In response to the persistent issue of traffic congestion, preparations for Metro rail connectivity have commenced in the Tricity comprising Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula. The initiation of the Metro train project aims to alleviate the significant traffic jams commonly experienced on the roads.

Considering the increasing population in the Tricity, the Metro project is deemed essential. A report prepared by the Rights Company (Rail India Technical and Economic Services) reveals that a substantial number of people, approximately 10 lakh and 21 thousand, travel daily, with the majority relying on buses and cars. The commuters include professionals, businessmen, students, and tourists. The report specifies that 5 lakh and 33 thousand individuals prefer cars and taxis, while 2 lakh opt for buses.

The proposed Metro route spans from Sultanpur, New Chandigarh, to Sector 28, Panchkula (34 km), Sukhna Lake ISBT (Inter-State Bus Terminus) Zirakpur to ISBT Mohali and Chandigarh Airport (41.20 km), and Anaj Bazaar Chowk (Sector-39) to Transport Light Chowk (Sector-26) (13.30 km). The first phase will witness the Metro operating from Sector-26 Mandi to ISBT Panchkula, covering approximately 18 kilometers. Following this, the track will extend from Sector-43 ISBT to Zirakpur, covering 20 kilometers. Subsequently, the second phase will commence, including a Metro route from ISBT Panchkula to Panchkula Extension (approximately 4 km) and from Airport Chowk to Village Sanauli (around 5 km).

The total cost of the Metro project in Chandigarh is estimated to be Rs. 2320 crore, in Panchkula Rs. 1280 crore, and in Mohali Rs. 4080 crore. The Metro’s implementation is anticipated to significantly ease traffic congestion and enhance the overall transportation infrastructure in the Tricity region.
