According to Foreign Minister of Jordan, Ayman Safadi, the increased tensions and violence in the Red Sea can be traced back to alleged war crimes” against Palestinians. He expressed concern that this situation could potentially escalate into a conflict in the Middle East. Despite Israel’s conflict with Hamas in the Gaza Strip, they have consistently denied any accusations of committing war crimes.
In response to strikes by the United States and Britain on military targets in Yemen following attacks on ships in the Red Sea, Safadi criticized the international community for not taking action against what he perceived as Israeli “aggression” towards Palestinians. He emphasized that this aggression posed a threat to security.
According to state media reports, Foreign Minister of Jordan stated, “The rising tensions witnessed in the region are a result of aggression on Gaza and their continuous commission of war crimes against Palestinians along with their disregard for the law.” He stressed that stability and security in the region were closely interconnected and urged the community to intervene before further Israeli actions potentially lead to a conflict.
In his statement, Safadi issued a warning; “The international community is facing a crossroads concerning issues, morality, legality and security.”Israel must take responsibility, put an end to its actions, and prioritize the protection of civilians. Otherwise, we risk being dragged into a conflict by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his extremist colleagues, which poses a threat to global peace.”
According to Safadi, Israel’s actions, including attempts to open new fronts, were pushing the region towards more conflict. He argued that Israel’s military actions against civilians in Gaza met the legal definition of genocide, a serious accusation that significantly escalates the rhetoric surrounding the ongoing conflict.
In response, Israel rejected accusations brought by South Africa at the United Nations’ top court, dismissing them as “grossly distorted.” The South African accusations claimed that Israel’s military operation in Gaza amounted to a state-led genocide campaign against the Palestinian population.
Israel consistently emphasizes its adherence to international law in its fight against Palestinian militants in Gaza, often operating in densely populated civilian areas. The situation underscores the complexities and challenges in the region, with the potential for further escalation and the urgent need for international intervention to address the ongoing tensions and prevent a broader conflict.
