New Delhi: The Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sanctioned the “Prithvi Vigyan (Prithvi)” scheme, a comprehensive initiative of the Ministry of Earth Sciences.
With a dedicated budget of Rs 4,797 crore earmarked for the period from 2021 to 2026, this scheme is set to revolutionise India’s approach to earth science research and application.
“Today, the Union Cabinet has approved the transformative PRITHvi Vigyan (PRITHVI) scheme. This initiative marks a significant stride in our journey towards advanced earth system sciences”, wrote PM Modi on X.
Prithvi marks a paradigm shift from fragmented research to a holistic, integrated approach. It goes beyond individual disciplines, encompassing the Earth System – the complex interplay between the atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere, cryosphere, and biosphere. This comprehensive understanding will underpin reliable services for India, ranging from accurate weather forecasting for farmers to preparedness for natural disasters like floods and cyclones.
One of the scheme’s core objectives is to strengthen and sustain long-term observations across these diverse realms. Imagine a vast network of sensors, satellites, and research stations meticulously recording the Earth’s vital signs – its rising temperatures, shifting ocean currents, melting glaciers, and tremors in the ground. This continuous monitoring will provide invaluable data for research, informing decision-making and policy formulation.
Prithvi also prioritizes innovation and technological advancements. By fostering collaboration between various MoES institutes and academic institutions, the scheme aims to develop cutting-edge solutions for sustainable resource management. This includes exploring alternative energy sources like solar and wind power, optimizing water resource utilization, and mitigating the impact of climate change.
