The administration of the Shri Jagannath Temple has introduced a dress code for devotees visiting the temple. Henceforth, attire such as shorts, torn jeans, skirts, and sleeveless garments will not be permissible. Temple authorities state that devotees must adhere to modest and dignified clothing while entering the sacred premises, refraining from ostentation or display.
This alteration has been visibly reflected in people’s appearances. On the first day of the new year, devotees, both men and women, are observed donning traditional attire such as dhoti-kurta, saree, salwar-kameez, and pajama-kurta. Additionally, the temple premises have imposed bans on the consumption of gutkha and paan, along with the use of plastic and polythene, commencing the new year.
According to an official from the Shri Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA), devotees are required to wear ‘decent attire’ to enter the temple. Devotees dressed in shorts, torn jeans, skirts, or sleeveless garments will not be granted permission to enter the temple. If someone attempts to visit the temple wearing torn or a skirt, the administrative officers of the temple may prevent their entry.
The temple administration specifies that devotees are not allowed to wear ripped jeans, half-pants, or sleeveless dresses. Instead, men can enter the temple wearing dhoti-kurta or pajama-kurta with a traditional cloth wrapped around, while women can wear sarees or salwar-suits.
This measure has been implemented to maintain the sanctity of the sacred space and preserve the traditional cultural values associated with the temple. Devotees are urged to comply with these guidelines to uphold the spiritual ambiance of the Shri Jagannath Temple and show respect to the deity.
