Chandigarh: Today at 4 PM, the Chief Ministers of Punjab and Haryana are set to hold a crucial meeting on the Sutlej-Yamuna Link Canal issue. Central Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat will also be present during this meeting in Chandigarh. The attempt during the meeting is to find a resolution to this long-standing dispute.

Earlier, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann stated that Punjab doesn’t have even a single drop of water to spare for other states. This statement comes after the Supreme Court’s decision, following which Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar wrote a letter to Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann expressing the desire to convene a meeting to resolve issues related to this canal. However, CM Mann, while expressing his willingness to participate in the meeting, reiterated that his state lacks the extra water for distribution.

The Sutlej-Yamuna Link Canal issue has been a contentious matter between the two states for several years. The canal was envisioned to divert water from the Ravi and Beas rivers between both states. After the Supreme Court’s ruling, Haryana’s CM Khattar reached out to Punjab’s CM Mann to initiate discussions for a resolution.

Despite the willingness to participate, CM Mann emphasizes the water scarcity in Punjab, aligning with his earlier statements on the state’s limited water resources. This meeting gains significance in the context of finding an amicable solution to a long-pending inter-state water dispute.

The involvement of the Central Jal Shakti Minister signals the broader attempt to address the matter at a national level. The discussions during the meeting are crucial in determining the way forward and resolving the issues associated with the Sutlej-Yamuna Link Canal. As the meeting unfolds, it is anticipated to shed light on the perspectives and approaches of both states in addressing this complex water-sharing matter.
