New Delhi: Vijay Diwas is celebrated on December 16 to commemorate India’s victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war. On the occasion, here are a few lesser-known facts that you must know about this day.
On the occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on X, “Today on Vijay Diwas, we pay heartfelt tributes to all the brave heroes who dutifully served India in 1971, ensuring a decisive victory. Their valor and dedication remains a source of immense pride for the nation”.
Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Pande, Chief of Naval Staff R. Hari Kumar and Vice Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Amar Preet Singh pay tribute at the National War Memorial on the occasion of Vijay Diwas in New Delhi.
The Kargil War was a limited war between India and Pakistan that lasted from May to July 1999. The conflict began when Pakistan sent infiltrators into the Kargil sector of the Line of Control (LoC), the de facto border between the two countries. The infiltrators were disguised as local Kashmiri militants, and they occupied strategic heights in the Kargil region.
The Indian Army launched Operation Vijay to dislodge the infiltrators. The operation was a success, and the Indian Army regained control of all the strategic heights by July 26, 1999.
Vijay Diwas is a day to commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of the Indian soldiers who fought in the Kargil War. The day is also a reminder of the importance of national security and the need to be prepared for any challenges that may arise.
