Bhopal: To ensure that patients do not die due to medical errors, for the first time, a death audit was conducted on the lines of Canada in AIIMS located in the capital Bhopal. 407 patients have died since January. Of these, a maximum 80 patients died due to head injuries. AIIMS management has issued guidelines along with the report to ensure that there is no delay in screening and clinical treatment in OPD.
AIIMS, one of the largest hospitals in the state, has conducted a death audit for the first time. Talking about the death audit report of Bhopal, the deaths of 67.8 percent men and 32.2 percent women have been studied. AIIMS doctors will also follow standard protocols with heart attack patients. Most of the deaths were due to multi-organ failure, road accident, suicide and wound rot. For this, now instead of delaying the treatment of patients brought to the hospital, they will be seen through guidelines.
From misdiagnoses leading to delayed treatment to medication errors with fatal consequences, these incidents highlight the urgent need for robust patient safety measures and improved healthcare infrastructure. While estimates suggest millions face medical harm annually in India, Madhya Pradesh’s specific burden remains a murky truth, demanding transparency and accountability for preventable tragedies.
