India’s envoy to the United States, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, expressed delight at Walmart’s debut of made-in-India bicycles in the US. Sandhu shared a photo on X (formerly Twitter) showcasing a blue bicycle, stating, “Make in India, Make for the World! Delighted to witness the launch of Walmart 🇺🇸 first made in 🇮🇳 bicycles, manufactured by #HeroCycles #Ludhiana.”

Walmart’s announcement revealed that these indigenous bicycles would be available in selected US stores just in time for the Christmas holidays. This move aligns with Walmart’s commitment to tripling exports to $10 billion annually by 2027.

Hero Ecotech, a prominent Indian bicycle manufacturer, designed a “cruiser-style” bicycle for Walmart under the Concord brand, catering to both adult-sized men’s and women’s versions. The cruisers sold in Walmart US stores incorporate over 90% of raw materials sourced from India.

Andrea Albright, Executive Vice President, Sourcing at Walmart, emphasized India’s pivotal role in meeting the rising demand from Walmart customers. The collaboration with Hero Ecotech contributes to strengthening global supply resilience while fostering economic growth worldwide.

Walmart initiated the Walmart Vriddhi program in 2019, aligning with the Make in India initiative. The goal is to empower approximately 50,000 MSMEs, aiding them in modernizing, scaling, and achieving both domestic and international ambitions. This initiative underscores Walmart’s commitment to supporting and fostering the growth of Indian businesses.

By bringing Indian-made bicycles to its stores, Walmart not only expands its product offerings but also promotes economic collaboration between the US and India. The incorporation of more Indian-sourced materials aligns with global supply chain diversification efforts, reinforcing the importance of sustainable and resilient business practices.
