The announcement came on Tuesday that Russia has declined a proposal put forth by the United States to secure the release of two detained Americans. Evan Gershkovich, a correspondent, for the Wall Street Journal and Paul Whelan, a Marine, are the individuals whose release is being sought.

During a press briefing Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the State Department informed journalists that multiple proposals had been made by the United States. He further revealed that in weeks a significant proposal was presented but rejected by Russia. Miller emphasised that both Secretary of State Antony Blinken and President Joe Biden are fully committed to finding a resolution for releasing these two individuals who are deemed ” detained” by the State Department.

Miller expressed his belief that Gershkovich and Whelan should never have been arrested in the place. He stated unequivocally that there is no priority for either Blinken or Biden other than securing their release.

However specific details regarding the rejected proposal were withheld by Miller during his briefing. It remains unclear if it involved any release of individuals.

Despite existing tensions between the United States and Russia, there have been instances where prisoner exchanges have taken place. One example involved basketball star Brittney Griner’s release after being detained on cannabis-related charges.

Evan Gershkovich, aged 32 at the time of his arrest in March, was apprehended during a reporting trip he undertook in Yekaterinburg, a city, in Russia.

He was the journalist, from the West to be imprisoned on charges of spying in Russia since the era. The reporter, his newspaper and the U.S. Government strongly deny the accusations of espionage. Recently a court, in Moscow decided to extend Gershkovich’s detention until January.

Paul Whelan, arrested in Moscow in 2018 while working in security for a U.S. vehicle parts company, has consistently claimed that the evidence against him was fabricated. His family recently reported that he was assaulted in prison, possibly due to his nationality.

As the situation unfolds, the U.S. government remains dedicated to securing the release of the detained Americans, navigating the complex diplomatic challenges surrounding their cases.
