Jabalpur: 8 thousand 475 metric tons of paddy has gone missing in Jabalpur district of Madhya Pradesh. According to an estimate, it is believed to be priced at more than Rs 16 crore.
Warehousing Corporation and Logistics is a government institution for storing grains in Madhya Pradesh. This institute is responsible for ensuring that the grains are stored and maintained properly. Since contract companies are not fulfilling their responsibilities properly due to which 8 thousand 475 metric tonnes of paddy kept in the open camp has gone missing.
Warehousing Logistics Corporation District Manager SR Nimod said that the contract for the maintenance of paddy was given to Go Green Company of Gujarat. After the matter came to light, an FIR is being prepared against the company.
98 thousand metric tons of paddy was kept in the open at 7 different places in Jabalpur. Out of this, 8 thousand 475 metric tons of paddy has gone missing. At the same time, about 500 metric tonnes of paddy has got spoiled due to being kept in the open. In the year 2021-2022, the maintenance contract was given to Go Green Company.
India is the largest paddy producing country in the world. Paddy is grown in more than 25 percent of the country. Madhya Pradesh is one of the leading rice-producing states in India. The state produced 10.5 million tonnes of rice in 2020. However, a significant amount of rice is lost or spoilt during harvesting, transportation, and storage.
Around 10% of the rice produced in Madhya Pradesh is lost during harvesting and transportation. These losses are due to a number of factors, including; improper harvesting techniques, poor handling of the rice, and inadequate transportation facilities.
An additional 5% of the rice produced in Madhya Pradesh is lost or spoilt during storage. These losses are due to; improper storage conditions, pest infestation, and fungal growth.
The total losses of rice in Madhya Pradesh amount to 15% of the total production. This means that around 1.575 million tonnes of rice is lost or spoilt every year.
