New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday extended the interim bail granted to former Delhi minister Satyendar Jain in a money laundering case till December 4 when his plea for regular bail will be taken up for hearing.

A bench of Justice Bela M Trivedi posted the matter for hearing on December 4 as Justice A S Bopanna, who is presiding over the case, was not available today.

”In the meanwhile, the interim bail, granted earlier, is extended till the next date of hearing, the bench said. Prior to this, the top court had extended the interim bail of Jain till October 9 and asked him to not make the pendency of the proceedings before it a ruse to delay the trial in the case.

The Enforcement Directorate has claimed that the AAP leader was seeking repeated adjournments in the trial court on grounds that his bail plea was pending before the apex court. The probe agency has alleged that Jain has taken as many as 16 dates from the trial court.

The apex court had on May 26 granted interim bail to Jain for six weeks for spinal surgery, saying a citizen has a right to receive treatment of his choice in a private hospital at his own expense. On September 12, it extended till September 25 the interim bail of Jain in the case. Satyendar Jain is an Indian politician who is a member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and a former Cabinet Minister in the Government of Delhi. He is an architect by profession and has held the portfolios of Health, Industries, Home, PWD, Power, Water, Urban Development and Irrigation & Flood Control in the Delhi government.

Born on 3 October 1964 in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, India, Satyendar Jain completed his education in Delhi. He earned a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the School of Planning and Architecture, Delhi, and then worked as an architect for the Central Public Works Department (CPWD).

Jain entered politics in 2013, joining the AAP, which was founded by Arvind Kejriwal in 2012. He was elected to the Delhi Legislative Assembly from the Shakur Basti constituency in February 2015 and became the Health Minister in the first AAP government of Delhi.

As Health Minister, Jain is credited with implementing several initiatives to improve the healthcare system in Delhi. These included:

  • Launching the Mohalla Clinics program, providing free primary healthcare services to the residents of Delhi.
  • Expanding the Jan Aushadhi Kendra scheme, making affordable generic medicines available to the public.
  • Initiating the free ambulance service ‘102’ in Delhi.
  • Increasing the number of beds in government hospitals.

In 2017, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered a case against Jain and his wife, Poonam Jain, alleging that they had disproportionate assets. The ED also registered a money laundering case against Jain in 2022. Jain is currently on interim bail in the money laundering case. He resigned from his ministerial positions in the Delhi government in May 2022 following his arrest by the ED.
