Endangering a key global shipping route, Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen hijacked a cargo ship in the Red Sea, endangering a key global shipping route, confirmed the Israeli government.

While there were no Israelis among the ship’s 25 crew members, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office condemned the seizure of what it said was a vessel owned by a British company and operated by a Japanese firm, without naming either of those.

Hours earlier, Houthi rebels in Yemen said they would target ships carrying the Israeli flag as well as those operated by or belonging to Israeli companies. A Houthi spokesman, posting on X, called on other countries to withdraw citizens working on Israeli vessels.

The Houthis are a Zaidi Shia political and armed movement from Yemen. They emerged in the 1990s as a religious revivalist movement in the Saada Governorate of northern Yemen. The group’s name comes from its founder, Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi, who led the movement from 2004 until his death in 2009.

The Houthis are a complex group with a long history. They are motivated by a combination of religious, political, and economic factors. They believe that they are the rightful rulers of Yemen and that the country should be governed according to Islamic law. They also believe that Yemen is being exploited by foreign powers, such as the United States and Saudi Arabia.
