NEW DELHI: India on Thursday expressed its hope for a positive outcome in the appeal process against the death sentence handed down to eight former Indian Navy personnel by a Qatari court. The External Affairs Ministry spokesperson, Arindam Bagchi, stated that the appeal process is underway and that the government is engaged with Qatari authorities on the matter.
Bagchi assured that the Indian government will continue to extend all legal and consular assistance to the affected individuals. He also informed that the Indian embassy in Qatar has been granted consular access to the detainees.
The eight former Navy personnel were sentenced to death by a Qatari court in October 2023 on charges of espionage. The Indian government has expressed its concern over the verdict and has been actively pursuing the matter with Qatari authorities.
The appeal process is expected to be lengthy and complex. However, India remains hopeful of a positive outcome and is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens abroad.
The eight former Indian Navy officers sentenced to death in Qatar were accomplished professionals with remarkable careers. They had served their country with distinction and had made significant contributions to the Indian Navy.
The seven navy officers were detained on August 8, 2022 facing accusations of espionage related to a submarine program. While the first trial for these Indian nationals took place in late March this year, Indian government had granted consular access to the nationals and were actively involved in efforts to secure their release.
