New Delhi: The sudden imposition of the death sentence on eight Indian Navy personnel in Qatar has caught Delhi off guard, presenting a legal and diplomatic challenge as they strive to find a resolution.
India is currently exploring diplomatic options to secure relief for the eight individuals who are currently facing execution. According to a report, these eight Indians have been accused of spying for Israel; however, there has been no confirmation of these charges from India’s side.
Sources suggest that the Indian embassy in Doha is reaching out to experts in Qatar, including a former government counsel from a reputable Qatari court, to prepare an appeal against the sentence. The embassy is also seeking guidance from lawyers in Doha regarding this death row case.
Delhi is closely examining the charges and evaluating the basis on which the court reached such a severe verdict.
Another significant challenge lies in the lack of transparency surrounding the trial. Delhi is actively working towards obtaining court documents, as Qatari authorities have not explained, for arresting these eight individuals.
As the legal team prepares for an appeal in court, there are also efforts being made to submit a mercy petition to the Emir of Qatar. The strategy involves pursuing both avenues as they are currently evaluating this approach.
Delhi is also reaching out to Doha on a diplomatic level, leveraging the strong and robust relationship between the two foreign ministries. The two countries share a strong economic partnership, with significant imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Qatar to India. Qatar Investment Authority has substantial investments in India’s new economy, including Bharti Airtel’s Airtel Africa, BYJU’s, Adani Transmission Ltd, Adani Green Energy, Reliance Retail Ventures Limited (RRVL), Swiggy, Dailyhunt, Allen Career Institute, among others.
