New Delhi: Again, the National Capital Region (NCR) finds itself grappling with a worsening air pollution crisis as winter arrives. In days, Delhi and Noida have witnessed a concerning decline in air quality. According to data from the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) on Monday morning, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in the capital surpassed 300 entering the ‘very poor’ category.

On Sunday, Delhi had an AQI of 302, also falling under the ‘very poor’ category. Anand Vihar, a neighbourhood in Delhi, reported the AQI at 345. Noida recorded ‘poor’ air quality on Monday morning with an AQI of 322. The day Noida’s AQI stood at 290. In contrast, Gurugram experienced air quality within the ‘moderate’ category with an AQI of 152.

The declining air quality has not gone unnoticed by residents who are experiencing discomfort. A resident from Delhi expressed concerns about escalating pollution levels. Mentioned having eyes along with increased smog. Many individuals in Noida and Delhi have also reported throat irritation and breathing difficulties over the days.

The increase in air pollution is believed to be caused by the decrease in temperatures and an uptick in burning occurrences in the states of Punjab and Haryana. Experts predict that the Air Quality Index (AQI) will continue to fall into the ‘very poor’ category for the days in the National Capital Region (NCR).

To address this recurring problem, the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) has been put into effect in Delhi. GRAP is implemented in four stages: Stage 1 when the air quality is ‘poor’ (AQI 201-300), Stage 2 when it’s ‘very poor’ (301-400), Stage 3 when it’s ‘severe’ (401-450), and Stage 4 when it’s ‘severe plus’ (above 450).

The situation underscores the need for a concerted effort to combat air pollution in the region, particularly as winter approaches, when such problems tend to exacerbate. Public awareness, government initiatives, and collective actions will be crucial in addressing this ongoing environmental challenge.
