Tokyo: The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued a tsunami advisory for the islands off of the Izu peninsula on the eastern coast of the country. The advisory is in effect for Miyakejima, Mikurajima, Hachijojima, and Aogashima.

The JMA has warned that tsunami waves of up to 1 meter could hit the islands within the next few hours. The JMA has advised people in the affected areas to evacuate to higher ground and to stay away from the coast. The tsunami advisory was issued after a magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck off the coast of Izu peninsula on Wednesday morning. The earthquake was followed by a number of aftershocks.

The JMA is monitoring the situation and will issue further updates as needed. Japan Meteorological Agency tweeted a press release regarding the same.

The last Tsunami occurred on March 11, 2011 in Japan. It was triggered by an earthquake and reached heights of 131 feet (4 meters). This was the largest Tsunami that occurred in Japan. It reached heights of up to 40.5 meters in Miyako and in Sendai area it traveled at 700 km/hr.
