Imphal: Amid escalating tensions in Manipur’s valley regions, a group made an attempt to breach Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s personal residence in Heingang, Imphal East, on Thursday night. Fortunately, the Chief Minister and his family were not present at the time of the incident.

At approximately 10:30 pm, security personnel successfully thwarted the attempt. Initially, the crowd numbered around “500-600” individuals, and Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel deployed at the scene responded with appropriate measures. The crowd was dispersed before it could breach the premises.

The valley areas of Manipur, primarily inhabited by the Meitei community, have been gripped by tension and widespread protests since Tuesday. These protests were sparked by the circulation of two photographs suggesting that two Meitei youths, Hijam Linthoingami (17) and Phijam Hemjit (20), who had been missing since July 6, may have been killed by militants.

On the following day, agitated students attempted to march toward the CM’s Bungalow and Raj Bhavan. To disperse the crowd, security personnel resorted to the heavy use of tear gas. However, representatives of the students were eventually permitted to meet with the Governor and the Chief Minister.

The situation in Manipur’s valley areas remains tense, and authorities are closely monitoring developments as they work to address the concerns and grievances of the local population.
