Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced on Wednesday that Russian forces were actively engaged in defensive operations in response to Ukraine’s counteroffensive, emphasizing that Moscow had no alternative but to emerge victorious.

Shoigu acknowledged the commencement of the autumn campaign and conceded during an interview with a reporter from Rossiya-1 state TV that the situation on the frontline presented challenges in certain areas. He stated, “The forces are maintaining active defense on the necessary, essential fronts. In some places it’s harder, in others simpler.” He also expressed confidence in the performance of soldiers and commanders, emphasizing their unwavering commitment to protecting vital locations where Ukrainian armed forces attempted to breach Russian lines.

Shoigu underscored that the primary objective was neutralizing enemy weaponry. Russia controls nearly a fifth of Ukraine’s territory following over 18 months of conflict. However, it has been compelled to withdraw from substantial areas it initially occupied, including regions near the capital Kyiv, and in the southern and eastern parts of Ukraine.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine remains complex and challenging, with significant implications for the region and global geopolitics. Russian forces continue to face off against Ukrainian forces, and the outcome of this conflict remains uncertain, with significant human and geopolitical ramifications.
