Punjab: In the wake of the second wave of the coronavirus in the country, a shocking revelation comes out from the director of one of the prestigious medical institutions PGIMER Chandigarh. The director of the institution confirms that 70 percent of the covid samples that they sent for a test in March had UK variants in them.
Professor Jagat Ram, the director of PGIMER said, “70 percent of samples sent to the National Centre for Diseases Control, Delhi in March had the UK variant of coronavirus. This strain is very infectious and affecting all age groups. Some samples also had the double mutant strain”.
He further added, “It was found that 70 percent samples had UK variants, one sample had the double mutation, and 20 percent had 681H mutants. Most of the samples are from Chandigarh”.
Though the condition in Chandigarh is a bit better than in other states, it does not seem to be far from attaining the scary numbers in the coming weeks or months. Meanwhile, a weekend curfew is imposed in the Union territory where only essential services are allowed from Friday 10 pm to Monday 5 am.
The administration said, “National Defence Academy (NDA) and other exams won’t be affected due to night curfew, and students can travel by showing admit cards. Vaccination program will continue during curfew”. There are almost 3700+ active cases in the UT and 407 people have lost their lives to the virus.
