New Delhi: With 1,03,794 fresh Covid cases, India saw the biggest-ever daily surge, taking the tally to 1,25,87,921. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday held a high-level meet to review the situation and has deployed central teams to the worst-hit states.   After the meet, PM Modi Tweeted, “Reviewed the COVID-19 and vaccination related situation across the country. Reiterated the importance of the five-fold strategy of testing, tracing, treatment, Covid-appropriate behaviour, and vaccination is an effective way to fight the global pandemic.”

The nation currently presents 7,37,870 active cases. Around 52,840 recuperations were recorded and 477 deaths. The total recuperative count is observed as 1,16,79,961.

A government official released a statement after the meeting attributing the sharp rise in the graph to the severe decline in compliance of Covid-appropriate behaviour primarily in terms of use of masks and maintaining ‘2 gaj ki doori’ (six-feet distance), pandemic fatigue and lack of effective implementation of containment measures at the field-level.

Recording dreading figures across the state, Mumbai, India’s financial capital, saw the highest-ever single-day spike with 11,163 new infections, taking the city’s tally to 4,52,445 cases. Around 57,074 fresh infections were reported in Maharashtra in the past 24 hours.  The Uddhav Thackeray-government on Sunday announced new restrictions including a night curfew in the state and a “strict lockdown” over the weekends from Friday 8 pm to Monday 7 am amid the unprecedented Covid surge.

The Centre has deployed teams to the severely hit states of Karnataka that reported 4,553 cases, Chhattisgarh 5,250, Delhi 4,033, Punjab 3,006 and Uttar Pradesh 4,136 infections in the past 24 hours.
