Sydney: On March 4, thousands of Australians joined the justice rallies as they demanded action against violence and sexual discrimination. Earlier many times, they have taken part in the rallies but there was a lack of action by the federal government on these issues.
The protesters participated in more than 40 rallies to call an end to sexism, misogyny, and dangerous workplace cultures. The organizers described the movement as “the biggest uprising of women that Australia has ever seen”. In 2019, in the Parliament House, Brittany Higgins, a former government advisor was raped which went public after some days.
Even Christian Porter, Attorney-General was accused of rape. Shocking allegations, including sex without proper consent with intoxicated women, forced kisses have been outlined by the women. Higgins said, “One out of every five women in Australia will be sexually assaulted or raped in their lifetime. If you are a woman of color, the statistics are even higher”.
She further added, “I was raped inside Parliament House by a colleague and for so long it felt like the people around me did not care about what happened because of what it might mean for them”.
ACTU Secretary and outspoken political activist Sally McManus, Aboriginal research scholar Tjanara Goreng Goreng and Saxon Mullins are the prime speakers at the rally which is held in Canberra. A major report stated that rallies are also set to be held in Wangaratta in Victoria and Lismore, Bega, and Byron Bay in South Wales.
