Pune’s Fire Brigade department received a call, in which a massive fire break out has been reported at the new unit of the Covishield vaccine manufacturer Serum Institute of India, situated at Manjari area in the city, near Hadapsar.

4 fire tenders have rushed to the spot immediately, who are working on bringing the fire under control. The unit that has caught fire, is situated at a distance from the Covishield manufacturers’ main unit.

It is noteworthy that the Serum Institute of India is one of the two suppliers of COVID-19 vaccines amidst the huge inoculation drive across the states and UTs. Moreover, on Wednesday, the first consignment of 1,50,000 Covishield vaccines was exported to Bhutan, which was the first-ever export of this indigenous vaccine.

The Serum Institute of India is currently manufacturing around 10 million doses of the vaccine every month. Also, the company tops the list of the largest vaccine manufacturers in the world, with a record of supplying 70% of the total vaccine produced globally every year.
