Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday attended the ‘Bhoomi Poojan’ ceremony of Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project Phase-II and Surat Metro Rail Project through video conferencing, in which he took a dig at the Congress party’s function when it was leading the Central government.

The PM, during his virtual address, said that the previous government had no approach or planning for the metro when they were leading, adding that more than 450 kilometers of the metro lines have come into operation within 6 years since the BJP party came into power.

During his virtual address at the ceremony, the PM said, “Work on projects worth Rs.17,000 crore is starting from today. This shows that the country’s efforts for new infrastructure projects are increasing during COVID-19. Ahmedabad and Surat are cities that will empower self-reliant India. Ahmedabad and Surat are receiving very important gifts today. Metro will further strengthen the connectivity in two major business centers of the country – Ahmedabad, and Surat.”

Modi, in his virtual address, also compared the functions performed by the previous government and the ruling government, stating – “Before 2014, only 225 kilometers of the metro line became operational in 10-12 years. In the last 6 years, over 450 kilometers of the metro network became operational. At present, work is underway on a 1000 kilometers long metro network in 27 cities. Once there was no modern approach for metro, and there was no metro policy”.
