New Delhi: In India, the overall case surge of COVID-19 affected people has reached 1,03,57,569 with 16,278 newly recorded cases during the latest tally. The active caseload, however, stands at 2,28,088.

Amidst these, 29,209 recoveries in the last 24 hours take the number of recovered people to 99,75,340. On the other hand, the death toll mounts to 1,49,886, with 200 newly recorded cases.

According to the statement given by the Union Health Ministry on Monday, a total of 38 people in India have been traced who are infected with the newly found UK-variant of the virus. “All these people have been kept in single room isolation indesignated healthcare facilities by respective state governments and their close contacts have also been put under quarantine”, said the Union Health Ministry.

Meanwhile, following the measures taken by the Ministry of Scotland, Britain Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday announced that the people in the country will be back to a full COVID-19 lockdown from Tuesday midnight (0000 GMT), which will probably be continued till the 2nd week of February.

The shutdown is coming back into force in order to bring a decrease in the infection rate. “The measures, which include the closure of primary and secondary schools, will come into effect on Wednesday”, said Prime Minister Johnson in a media address, adding, “As of Monday, almost 27,000 people with COVID were in hospital, which is 40 percent more than at the peak of the first wave of the outbreak on April last year”.
