Coronavirus India: crosses 56 lakh mark; Death toll crosses to grim milestone of 90,000

New Delhi: According to the latest update by the Union Health Ministry, nearly 83,500 new cases & 1,085 deaths due to the coronavirus in 24 hours has taken the overall tally of India’s COVID-19  to cross the 56 lakh mark.

While 45,87,613 people accounting to 81.25% of the total cases have recovered from the disease, there are nearly 96,8377 patients who are still undergoing treatments against the infection due to the deadly virus. Around, 1.59% of the infected patients have succumbed to the virus in the country so far.

The coronavirus caseload surged to 56,46,010, while the death toll climbed to 90,020

Here are the major highlights from today’s Union health ministry data:

– Fall in active cases for the 5th consecutive day

– 83.3k new cases, 8.3k higher than the 75k reported the previous day

– India crosses 90k total deaths. More than 1k daily deaths for the 22nd consecutive day

– India’s cases per million population is now higher than the world average (India: 4082/million; World: 4078/million)

– Maharashtra reports fall in active cases for the 5th consecutive day

– Only 4 Indian states now have more than 50k active cases (Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh)

– 9.53 tests yesterday. 20.4k higher than that on Monday

Meanwhile, India has the highest number of recoveries in the world and for the past four days, the number of people who recuperated from COVID19 daily was more than new instances of the infection reported each day, the government said on Tuesday. At a press briefing, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said India has the highest number of recovered cases in the world at 44,97,867.

6,62,79,462 samples tested up to 22nd September for Covid-19. Of these, 9,53,683 samples were tested yesterday, said Indian Council of Medical Research.
