Jammu & Kashmir: Murmu resigns as Lieutenant General; Manoj Sinha takes over

Kashmir: On 5th august, in a major development, GC Murmu resigned as Lieutenant General of Jammu & Kashmir, exactly on the day, Jammu & Kashmir completed its first anniversary of abrogation of article 370 and article 5, which provided special status to the erstwhile state.

According to the statement released by President’s Office, Murmu on Wednesday resigned from his post in Jammu and Kashmir and Manoj Sinha has been appointed as his successor.

President Ram Nath Kovind accepted Murmu’s resignation on Thursday, informed president officials.

“The President has accepted the resignation of Shri Girish Chandra Murmu as Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir. The President has been pleased to appoint Shri Manoj Sinha to be the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office vice Shri Girish Chandra Murmu,” read the statement

The sources in the government said Murmu may be appointed as the next Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG). Rajiv Mehrishi, who is the CAG now, is scheduled to complete his term this week. Sources in Srinagar said the L-G’s office cancelled a scheduled meeting with a media delegation from New Delhi late afternoon.

Last year, on August 5, the Centre ended the special status of Jammu and Kashmir granted under the Article 370 of the Constitution and bifurcated it into two Union Territories. In October, after the bifurcation was implemented, Murmu was appointed as the first Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir.
