Sanchi: In a monumental step towards combating climate change and fostering sustainable living, Madhya Pradesh’s Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan is set to inaugurate India’s first solar city in Sanchi today. This ambitious initiative, which aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of establishing a solar city in every Indian state, is anticipated to notably diminish carbon emissions by approximately 13,747 tonnes yearly, equating to the carbon absorption of about 2.3 lakh mature trees.

The grand inauguration, scheduled for 4 p.m. at Sanchi’s local stadium in the Raisen district, marks a significant stride in India’s commitment to environmental conservation, saving upwards of Rs 7 crore annually on energy-related expenses for the government and its citizens.

This historical endeavour will transform the heritage site of “Sanchi” into a beacon of renewable energy usage, promoting energy literacy among its residents and fostering behavioural modifications in their day-to-day routines. The move is part of a broader strategy to mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change and substantially reduce carbon emissions nationwide.

Furthermore, the Madhya Pradesh government has collaborated extensively with the community under the “Individual Social Responsibility” initiative to establish solar water kiosks at various locations, thereby enhancing public amenities. The launch also unveils eco-friendly transportation options, including four battery-operated e-rickshaws that are pollution-free and substantially reduce accident risks, paving the way for green employment opportunities.

Augmenting this green initiative, the city will host two battery-powered garbage vehicles, reducing environmental pollution and promoting eco-tourism. Additionally, the city has embraced the burgeoning e-vehicle trend, establishing charging stations equipped with seven commercial and e-rickshaw charging points, thus facilitating the rapid and affordable expansion of electric vehicle facilities in India.
