Beijing: US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo is set to hold discussions with officials during her trip to Beijing from Monday to Wednesday. This visit is seen as an attempt to ease the growing trade tensions between the world’s two economies.

This move follows a series of high-profile visits by US dignitaries to China, indicating an improvement in relations. These diplomatic efforts could lay the groundwork for a meeting between the leaders of both countries. In fact, US President Joe Biden has hinted at a summit with his counterpart, Xi Jinping, in the near future.

Upon her arrival in Beijing on Sunday, Raimondo was warmly received by Lin Feng, who heads China’s commerce ministry department for the Americas and Oceania. The US Commerce Department highlighted that Raimondo aims to have discussions regarding the US-China trade relationship challenges faced by businesses and potential areas of collaboration. Additionally, Raimondo’s itinerary includes a visit to Shanghai, which is one of China’s economic centres.

The relationship between Beijing and Washington has experienced a decline. Is currently at one of its lowest points in recent history. The US and Beijing have differing opinions primarily due to the trade restrictions imposed by the US. The US claims these measures are necessary for its security. Beijing believes they are intentionally designed to hinder its economic progress.
