Government Urges Discussion on Manipur in Parliament Monsoon Session; Defence Minister Informs LS, Adjournment in Both Houses
New Delhi: The Monsoon Session of Parliament encountered a beginning on its day with both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha experiencing early adjournments. The Lok Sabha was adjourned until 12 pm, due to the uproar regarding violence in Manipur. Similarly in the Rajya Sabha members raised concerns, about the Manipur situation through points of order resulting in an adjournment until 2;30 p.m.
The situation in Manipur remained a prominent topic during the first day’s proceedings of the Monsoon Session, which commenced on Thursday. The Opposition demanded that the Centre initiate discussions on the Manipur violence issue. Consequently, both Houses were adjourned for the day following the lunch break. Before adjourning the Lower House, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prahlad Joshi assured members that the government is prepared to engage in discussions on the Manipur violence in both Houses, with the Home Minister providing his response after the discussions.
During the session, the Lok Sabha was first adjourned till 2 p.m. to observe obituary references. However, when it reconvened at noon, the Rajya Sabha experienced uproarious scenes as the Opposition demanded the suspension of business under Rule 267 to discuss the situation in Manipur. After the Centre expressed readiness, the Chair announced a short-duration discussion on the issue, which led to further protests from the Opposition, objecting to the brief discussion. Amidst the chaos, the House faced its second adjournment of the day.
The 12th session of the Lok Sabha is starting at the time, as the establishment of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA). This alliance consists of 26 opposition parties. Is formed to contest against the BJP led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. During this session the government has a list of 31 bills to discuss which includes a proposed law concerning data protection. The Monsoon Session is scheduled to conclude on August 11.
As the session progresses, discussions on important issues, including the Manipur situation and legislative matters, are expected to shape the parliamentary proceedings in the coming days.
